Oddly, I had been at the supermarket earlier that day, before the news broke, and saw an article about her on the cover of some tabloid. I didn’t pick it up and read it as I never read those things, but the timing was noteworthy, I thought, in hindsight.

If you’ve never read Last Call by Tim Powers, you should check it out. On top of being a fantastic urban fantasy novel (and an award winner and one of my all-time favorite novels), it’s largely set in Vegas, and shows a bit of how fast that town changes.

There are some who argue that writing is much the same as lying. I’ll agree in that some of the same rules apply–telling a whopper and selling it with convincing, small details makes all the difference.

That’s exactly the kind of setting I prefer as a reader: the tiny, not-usually-mentioned detail that paints the entire scene with flavor. Come to think of it, you’re especially good at it for places which have gone to seed – like the junkyard in Deacon Carter’s last stand, or the carnival, or the bar that Mr Gray plays.

Can’t help but think of my time living in Las Vegas and how much that town changes at such a fast pace. And wonder if that elephant is still peeking over the big cinderblock wall along I-15…hmmm

Excellent reminders to get past stereotypical settings. I love the elegant neon sign of the ’50s era ballroom dancers above the loud, sleazy pub in Fremont.
